Mark Zuckerberg Made $3.5 Billion Last Month

November was a good month for Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook's stock shot up from $21.08 a share on the first day of trading in November to $28 a share at the end of the day Friday, its highest price since July. Zuckerberg, who owns about 504 million shares of Facebook stock, gained about $3.48 billion as a result.

When Facebook first went public at $38 a share in May, Zuckerberg's shares were worth $19.1 billion. In the following months, the stock dropped to less than half that IPO price to $17.55 in late August, pushing Zuckerberg's net worth down to $8.84 billion.

Facebook Hacks Its Employees to Teach Lessons on Cyberattacks [EXCLUSIVE]

When Facebook teaches its staff about how to detect and prevent cyberattacks, there isn't some hum-drum Power Point presentation. Instead, it hacks its own employees.

The company told Mashable it recently celebrated its second-annual "Hacktober," a month-long event in October which features a series of simulated security threats attacking staffer computers to see who would fall for them and who would report the issues

If employees reported a phishing scam or security threat developed by Facebook -- which showed up throughout the site or sent to company email addresses -- they received a prize such as a Facebook-branded shirt, bandana or sticker. If the security threat went unreported or was clicked, staffers would undergo further training.

4 Successful and Creative Facebook Contests

Years ago, if a marketer wanted to run a contest, he’d have to run print ads and hope that people would take the time to fill out an entry form and then mail it in. The Internet made things easier, but you still assumed that consumers would somehow find their way to your website.

Facebook adds another layer of ease to the process: Consumers are already there doing something else. If the promotion looks interesting enough, filling out an online form isn’t that big a deal. Rodney Mason, the chief marketing officer of promotions agency Moosylvania, says Facebook-only promotions have a lot of advantages. “One would be the ease of use,” he says. “You can also connect with people…

Why Mainstream Social Networks Complicate Our Identities [OPINION]

People are naturally social creatures. That's what makes social media such a powerful concept. Social media channels allow human beings to sort themselves into groups and factions seamlessly, and maintain intimate relationships at greater distances than ever before.

But as anthropologist Herbert Spencer describes in his theory of the social organism, society is a system of interrelated parts that operate interdependently. Social media users understand that concept intuitively, and segment their relationships accordingly.

For instance, you are not the same person at work as you are among friends on a Friday night. The things you talk about, the vocabulary you use and the friendships… Continue reading...

You might want to spruce up that Facebook profile pic, because artist Adam Ellis could interpret it for you using his incisive caricature style of drawing.

He calls the series of drawings you’ll see in the gallery below “Never Be My Friend,” but we’re certain he means that in the nicest possible way:

64% of Small Businesses Think Social Media Is Unnecessary [STUDY]

Small businesses don’t seem to be swept up in the social media revolution, according to a new study.

Hiscox, a small business insurance provider, polled 304 decision makers for U.S. businesses with between one and 249 employees in June. Of those polled, just 12% considered using social media a “must” for their business. However, 50% of respondents said they couldn’t do without word-of-mouth marketing. Just 4% said the same about social media marketing.

According to eMarketer, a whopping 64% of those polled said social media was either not necessary or not something they had an opinion about. Of those small businesses that were using social media for marketing, Facebook was the most common vehicle, followed by LinkedIn.

Nicole Perrin, senior editor at eMarketer, says she’s not surprised by the results. “We typically don’t see that they see this as the be-all, end-all,” she says, noting that small businesses often lack the resources to execute a social media marketing plan. “They’re still very focused on traditional word of mouth and very used to traditional marketing.”

Facebook Updates Your News Feed: Introducing Topic Groups

Facebook has started grouping status updates by topic, in the hopes that the update will help make sense of your News Feed.

Now, should your friends be sharing posts with similar themes — such as going to see the same movie — you’ll see a single News Feed story that lumps them together (see the example below).

“You may notice some of your news feed stories are now grouped together by topic,” the 750 million member-strong social network posted on its Facebook Page Monday. “We want to show you the most relevant and interesting information, and this test is designed to show you trends among what your friends are saying.”

As with every Facebook change, not all users are loving the algorithmic alteration. Many of the initial comments on Facebook’s post were negative.

What’s your take? Share your thoughts in the comments.
