Can Steve Carell Keep It Up?

We’d like to welcome to Steve Carell to the wonderful world of social media! Best known for his role on NBC’s The Office, Steve Carell joined Twitter yesterday and we have to say that his first five Tweets are pretty epic. True to form, or rather true to Michael Scott, his former character on The Office, Steve started off with a very #thatswhatshesaid joke:

Steve followed with a disclaimer that he would not continue with “That’s What she Said Jokes” but then proceeded to deliver more 4 more #thatswhatshesaid one-liners.

This case highlights how offline influence can translate to online influence. Within 24 hours after signing up and getting his account verified, Steve set off a torrent of Tweets and Retweets announcing his arrival on Twitter from other highly influential users:

Klout Score: 85

Klout Score: 82

And while Steve may protest, “I don’t think that I can keep this up,” we say you can do it, Steve! You’ve got Klout.

We’d like to give a shoutout to our friends at @SimplyMeasured who helped us whip up stats! Check out the sweet new influencer metrics they recently released at simplymeasured.com.

Super Bowl XLVI Influence All-Stars

This Sunday the New England Patriots will face the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. Whether you’re in it to watch commercials, sweat over Ron Gronkowski’s injury, check out Madonna’s half-time show, or worship Eli Manning’s right arm, the Super Bowl has something for you.

This year could be the most social Super Bowl yet as fans everywhere collectively cry, argue, jeer, rejoice and more on social media using whatever gadgets they have on hand. To help you get the most out of your social bowl experience, we’ve found the people you should be tuning into on Twitter. With that, we present to you the Super Bowl XLVI Influence All-Stars that include NFL analysts, the top influencers on the #Superbowl, and of course, players from the Giants and Patriots teams.

We also took a look at the Super Bowl content that had the most impact within the past month. The most influential tweet by far came from Mark Herzlich, linebacker for the New York Giants. Herzlich was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in 2009. He took some time to battle the disease, made a full recovery, and returned to football in 2010. Two days ago, he tweeted triumphantly:

Retweeted 15802 times

On a more humorous note, Lord Voldemort, the parody of the infamous villain from the Harry Potter series, made an ominous prediction that spread through the Twittersphere like wildfire. The Dark Lord wrote:

Retweeted 4421 times

Vinny Guadagnino, reality star from the Jersey Shore, made waves simply by expressing some honest New York Giants fan love:

Retweeted 2991 times

Last but not least, Rob Gronkowski, tight end for the New England Patriots, sent many people ROFLing when he tweeted as his brother Chris Gronkowski, fullback for the Indianapolis Colts.

Retweeted 625 times

We’d like to thank our friends at @TweetStarGame for their help putting together the top Super Bowl players. They’ve also made a sweet Super Bowl page that will help you connect with all the players from both teams this weekend. Check it out!

Will you be watching the Super Bowl? What are you looking forward to seeing? Which team are you rooting for?

Top Brands at CES 2012

The 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas started earlier this week. Over 3000 companies will be attending in full force with newest and flashy gadgets for the upcoming year. The biggest news so far is that this will be Microsoft’s last year at CES. Apple has historically been a no-show and it appears that Microsoft is starting to follow suit.

Personally, I’m excited to hear about the newest innovations for televisions and handheld devices. It amazes me how fast the technology improves each year and how the devices we use become even more awesome. I remember my first cell phone in junior high. It was a brick and had a tiny 1″ x 2″ black and green screen that could only make calls. Now we have touch-screen smart phones that can surf the web, video chat and play music. Oh the future we live in!

Regardless, it looks like what happens in Vegas, won’t stays in Vegas! Without further ado, here are the top 10 companies from this year’s CES conference!

Be sure to check out our CES Klout Perks:

The 10 Most Influential Retailers

‘Tis the season to be spending! There’s no easier way to spread the holiday cheer than to make it rain gadgets, gift cards, and galore. Still haven’t found the perfect gift for your loved ones? Check out one of these ten major retailers on your next trip to the mall or on the next browser window you open. From big-box stores to online shopping sites, our list of the most influential retailers has it all.

Amazon claims the top spot followed by JCPenney and Sports Authority in close third. Nearly all the retailers highlight products, announce sales or giveaways, and engage their customers with topical posts such as, “Who do you have left to buy for this holiday?” ThinkGeek is particularly great at quirky and personal interactions. Check out this tweet for example :

It’s also interesting to note the diverse approach to customer service. Some retailers like Macy’s respond to nearly all of their users individually. Other retailers answer support questions sparingly or separate customer service completely from their main social media channels. For example, BestBuy created an entirely new Twitter called Twelpforce to answer tech-related questions.

With consumers spending an increasing amount of time online, no doubt these brands will continue to expand their digital presence as well. With that, here are the top ten retailers.

Do any of these surprise you? Where is your favorite place to shop?

75 days of the Occupy Movement

Social media allows people to voice their opinions and spread their ideas to an audience on a scale that was unimaginable a few years ago. An idea propagated on social media by multiple sources can gain momentum, reach critical mass, and culminate in real world change.

The Egyptian Revolution is a recent example of this phenomenon. Today, we are in a similar situation. The Occupy movement in social media has become so closely intertwined with events in the real world that the two are hardly distinguishable. Here, we take a closer look at how the Occupy movement advanced through actions on Twitter.

Adbusters, the anti-consumerist magazine, initiated the “Occupy” idea in June just on the heels on the Egyptian Revolution. However, it only gained traction on Twitter in the later half of September. The agitation in the social media space helped solidify plans for the Occupy Wall Street protest that occurred on September 17th, 2011. This day is considered widely as the start of the Occupy movement.

We analyzed retweet data from Twitter between September 15th, 2011 and November 29th, 2011. We looked for all retweets that mentioned “occupy” and related terms (even #occupyklout). The chart below shows the number of retweets per day over the 75-day period. The peaks in activity correspond, unsurprisingly, to important events in the timeline of the movement.

The table below shows the number of retweets on days that Occupy events occurred. It is interesting to note that in some cases, the rise of Twitter retweets follows a real-world event, while in other cases it precedes real-world events.

Date # of Retweets Event
9/17/2011 70,307 The first day of the Occupy Wall Street gathering that an estimated 1,000 people attended.
9/24/2011 59,084 At least 80 arrests are made by the NYPD after protesters begin marching uptown, forcing the closure of several streets. Soon after the arrests, videos begin to appear around the web.
9/25/2011 68,103
10/01/2011 118,290 Protesters set out to march across the Brooklyn Bridge. The New York Times reported that more than 700 arrests were made.
10/02/2011 133,726
10/04/2011 86,686
10/05/2011 116,305 Joined by union members, students, and the unemployed, the demonstrations swelled to the largest yet with an estimated 5,000 to 15,000 demonstrators marching from lower Manhattan’s Foley Square to Zuccotti Park.
10/06/2011 167,345
10/14/2011 186,391
10/15/2011 257,894 Tens of thousands of demonstrators staged rallies in 900 cities around the world.
10/16/2011 203,050
10/25/2011 103,462 Police cleared and closed an Occupy Oakland encampment. An Iraq War veteran from the U.S. Marines is in critical condition after “being hit in the head by a police projectile.”
10/26/2011 244,228 Hundreds of OWS protesters marched near Union Square in support of Iraq War veteran and Occupy Oakland protester Scott Olsen.
10/27/2011 193,265
11/15/2011 394,463 NYPD began to clear Zuccotti Park.
11/17/2011 261,392
11/18/2011 144,007 Occupy movement protesters on the UC Davis campus are pepper sprayed.

So who were the catalysts of this massive movement? We discovered the top influencers by looking at Twitter users whose Occupy-related content was retweeted the most. The table below shows the top users and the number of times their content was retweeted. Incidentally, the average Klout score of these users is about 73.

Many of the top influencers are groups of people, such as the hacktivist group Anonymous (@AnonyOps, @AnonOps, and @YourAnonNews). We also find prominent figures driving the movement such as filmmaker Michael Moore and Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont. But the true power of social media is that you don’t have to be a famous director or a U.S. senator to be heard. Lesser-known individuals such as Liza Sabater and Allison Kilkenney were instrumental in driving action not only in social media but in the real world as well.

The Occupy movement demonstrates that with social media, a small group of influencers can generate and spread an idea that reaches thousands of people, who in turn amplify the idea to millions of others. Klout aims to be a tool for measuring influence. But beyond that, Klout enables people to find the right channels to make themselves heard and to find the right people who will take their ideas further.

So go ahead, spread an idea. Start a movement!

Top 10 Most Influential Airlines

Thanksgiving is fast approaching! This season is all about family, friends, food, football, and five-finger turkeys drawn in crayon. I’m an East coast transplant in the Bay Area and like many other people, I’ll have to go the extra mile (or three thousand) to spend time in a four-day, carbohydrate-induced coma with my loved ones. For that, I’d like to give thanks to the airlines that make holidays at home possible.

What you’ll notice about the top ten airlines is that they all deliver outstanding personalized attention. Whether you’re musing over the in-flight movie on Twitter or uploading an Instragram of that rad airport sculpture, these airlines care about your content and your overall travel experience. Did you lose a bag? Check your phone! Not because you’ll find your bag there, but because you probably just received a message from an airline representative who is talking to the baggage team right now on your behalf. With that, here are the top ten airlines with Klout.

10 Most Influential Talk Show Hosts

The talk show: a genre that feels unscripted and conversational, providing entertainment and sometimes enlightenment. For every talk show, there is a host with a distinct personality. There’s the comedian, the journalist, the provocateur, and the satirist. You can find all these styles represented here on our Klout list of influential talk show hosts. The top three are Ellen DeGeneres, Conan O’Brien, and Jimmy Fallon. What’s the key to their success? It’s a blend of exclusive online content, promotional updates, and daily musings. Oh, and sprinkle in some humorous one-liners like this one from Conan.

“In North America yesterday, for a few seconds, the entire internet went down. Or, as it’s known in my house, ‘The Day I Spoke to my Wife.’”

Check out the rest of the top ten here.

Forbes’ Most Powerful Women with Klout

Forbes recently published a list of the 100 Most Powerful Women that includes leaders from the political, media, entertainment, non-profit, and business worlds. No doubt these women have a lot of clout in their respective industries, but how does that translate to online influence?

Well, Lady Gaga has both the highest (relative) Forbes ranking and the highest Klout score. Gaga’s digital influence comes as no surprise. Beginning with MySpace and then moving to Facebook, Twitter, and even Farmville, Gaga has embraced all forms of social media. She takes pride in personally connecting with her “little monsters” which encourages her fans to engage and respond online. That, however, seems to be where any correlation between Forbes ranking and Klout score ends.

The Forbes women are leading humanitarian efforts, developing game-changing products, and creating content that reach millions. We think it’s commendable that in addition to all their work, the top ten women on our Klout list spend time engaging with their community through social media. For that we’d like to give +K in shaping the world both off and online.
