The never-dull story of Kai the Hitchhiker took a dark turn last week when the viral hero was unexpectedly arrested on murder charges. Since then, a small handful of online campaigns have tried to drum up support for the man who famously referred to himself as "homefree" — not homeless — and set him back on his untethered way

Kai, less frequently known by his given name of Caleb McGillvary, was arrested at a Philadelphia bus terminal last Thursday. He is charged with killing a 73-year-old lawyer named Joseph Galfy, Jr., in Galfy's home in Clark, N.J. Police found Galfy's body in his house last Monday after he and McGillvary met in New York City. The cause of death was determined as blunt force trauma Read more...

A glitch Thursday night prompted rumors that Instagram was randomly deleting accounts. However, the company says although some people lost access to their accounts for a short time, there was no mass purge.

Nevertheless, during the height of the rumors Thursday night, the hashtag #Dontdeletemyaccount made the rounds on Instagram (where more than 500,000 photos used the tag) and on Twitter. As many noted, using such a hashtag would be unlikely to change anyone's mind

OMG youth of the world relax @instagram isn't suddenly going to delete your account for not posting #dontdeletemyaccount

Tumblr isn't the only sought-after billion-dollar startup in town

Waze, a popular mobile mapping app, has reportedly been in talks with Facebook for several weeks about a possible acquisition for as much as $1 billion. Now, Bloomberg reports that other large tech companies, including Google, are considering a bid for the startup

Citing sources familiar with the situation, Bloomberg reports that Google approached Waze about a possible bid after the details of Facebook's interest in the startup became public. Waze is reportedly looking for an acquisition price of more than $1 billion. Neither Google nor Facebook are said to be close to sealing the deal yet, and it's certainly possible that Waze is trying to incite a bidding war to drive up the price, or that it may simply back away from talks and use the press as leverage for more venture funding. Robert Reimann watched the second plane hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 and then observed as his office nearby destroyed as the towers fell. Then he did something few Americans considered at the time: He took a bike tour across Iran.

"I wanted to see a Muslim country and see what people in that part of the world were actually thinking vs. what the press was reporting," he says. "So I got my way into Iran and rode through there with a New York Cycle Club jersey on."

The trip had an unexpected effect on Reimann's vocation. A former banker and CEO of a mobile publishing company, Reimann moved to Germany and, in 2009, founded BikeSherpa, a company that arranges bike tours in Europe "with a special expertise in beer-based travel in Germany, the Czech Republic and Belgium." BikeSherpa has respectable 1,000 or so fans on Facebook, but Reimann says he's more interested in forging a deeper connection with his existing fans than cultivating new ones. Read more...

Though Facebook is still the most popular social network among teens, their enthusiasm for Mark Zuckerberg's network is decreasing, according to new findings from the Pew Research Center.

Pew reports that 77% of online teens (ages 12-17) surveyed use Facebook. But while Pew's findings show that teens view Facebook participation as important for socializing, they have "waning enthusiasm for Facebook," as explained in the video above. The report cites teens' dislike for over-sharing and stressful "drama" on the social network. Teens also don't like the fact that more and more adults are joining Facebook, although Pew found that 7 in 10 teens are Facebook friends with their parents. Read more...

ZZ Ward, who Fuse TV recently proclaimed as one of 30 must-see artists at South by Southwest, just launched a web app that plots when fans first discovered her. How?

The "365 Days of ZZ Ward" app uses Facebook's Open Graph to browse users' Facebook activity and plot their ZZ Ward-tagged status updates, photos and videos.

The moments will be displayed on an interactive timeline, and fans' social participation with the experience will unlock exclusive music content. At launch, people will be able to earn access to four videos and a free MP3 download of an unreleased song

"The app will actually get better over time as more fans connect to it and new ZZ content is added," Brian Ressler, director of digital marketing at Disney Music Group, told Mashable. The app will add new unlockable content every three weeks or so Read more...
